Basic description of the Steyr AUG:
The iconic bullpup-style Steyr AUG (Armee Universal Gewehr – Universal Army Rifle) has been one of the most recognizable rifles in the world since its adoption by the Austrian army in 1977 as the StG.77. The AUG has been in development since the late 1960s as a replacement for venerable but obsolete Stg.58 (FN FAL) battle rifles for Austrian army. Since its introduction the AUG gained serious popularity.
The AUG is a semi-convertible, select-fire “Bullpup” configured assault rifle which uses an adjustable, short-stroke gas piston action firing from a rotary bolt. The AUG is chambered for the 5.56x45mm NATO standard cartridge feeding from a detachable, box-type magazine. The AUG assault rifle boasts fully ambidextrous controls. The select-fire is designated by the distinct “two-stage” trigger system which is pressure-guided to respond through single-shot and full-auto firing modes, there is no conventional fire selector. The first stage being semi and additional pressure to the second stage brings the weapon into full-automatic fire more. There is a bolt release button which allows fast reloading of the rifle, two symmetrical ejection ports, one of which is always covered, and a 3 position safety (lateral push-through type) that locks trigger is located above the pistol grip.
The “Bullpup” design maintains its short overall length, without influencing the barrel length, to meet or exceed required accuracy standards. The “Bullpup” design makes it a short, well-balanced rifle with high reliability and accuracy.
The AUG has a modular design. It was designed as a family of rifles that could be quickly adapted to a variety of roles by simply changing the barrel. There are four basic barrels. The standard rifle barrel is 508 mm (20″) long. Later include a compact 350 mm (13.7″) barrel , 407 mm (16″) carbine barrel, and the 621 mm (24.4″) light machine gun barrel. The last mentioned is fitted with integral folding bipod. Barrel replacement takes only a few seconds. The AUG is famous for its modular concept which permits field stripping into the main groups within a few seconds.
Due to its utmost flexibility design concept, the AUG is a multi-purpose assault rifle, for day and night operations. Armed and Special Forces all over the world are trusting in the AUG. The Steyr AUG made its name for its reliability, good ergonomics and decent accuracy.
Austrian made parts kits are sold out. All remaining parts kits were manufactured by SME, based in Malaysia and made under contract.
